Field of Activities of the Chair

The Chair of Non-destructive Testing (NDT) is the AG6 group within the Center for Building Materials (cbm) in Munich-Pasing and is allocated to the Department of Materials Engineering in the TUM School of Engineering and Design. The Chair has additional offices and laboratories at the Reseach Campus in Garching and the Business-Campus in Garching-Hochbrück. Research interests are the development and application of non-destructive test methods for the investigation of materials, components, equipment and structures, as well as the education of students in non-destructive testing methods.

Special Topics:

Quality control during manufacturing and optimizing processes

  • Investigation of resin-bonded materials during the manufacturing process (process optimization)
  • Assessing the design quality of components

Inspection of buildings and facilities

  • Condition assessment of plants and structurs
  • Development of strategies for quality assurance and inspection of components and structures
  • Failure analysis in terms of repairs and rehabilitation of a plant
  • Success of restoration measures

Continuous surveillance / monitoring

  • Monitoring of plants and components under the Struc-tural Health Monitoring
  • Miniature sensors for condition monitoring of plants

Applications / Materials

  • Mechanical engineering (wind turbines, aviation and aerospace structures, automotive, plant engineering)
  • Civil Engineering (concrete, steel, timber, natural stone)
  • Buildings of cultural heritage (preservation)
  • Biomechanics (e.g. Investigation of failure processes in the human femur)
  • Composite materials (CFRP, GFRP), polymers, steel, ceramics, (reinforced) concrete, wood-based material and natural stone
  • Nondestructive examination of historic objects
  • Archaeological forensics and support of law enforcement activities
  • Drone aerial assessment of buildings and facilities (including IR thermography)
