PhD Course “Hydration and Microstructure Characterisation of Cementitious Materials”
Monday, August 10, 2026 - Friday, August 14, 2026

The Professorship of Mineral Construction Materials at the Technical University of Munich is hosting this year’s doctoral course on “Hydration and Microstructure Characterization of Cementitious Materials”. In a team effort, the course is given together by a team of lecturers of leading experts on cement chemistry and binder technology from around Europe:
- Klaartje De Weerdt (Norwegian University of Science and Technology, NTNU, Norway)
- Frank Winnefeld (Swiss Federal Laboratories of Materials Science and Technology, EMPA, Switzerland)
- Arezou Baba Ahmadi (Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden)
- Hoang Nguyen (University of Oulu, Finland)
- Jørgen Skibsted (Aarhus University, Denmark)
- Alisa Machner (Technical University of Munich, Germany)
The professorship of Mineral Construction Materials of the Technical University of Munich is hosting this doctoral course on hydration and microstructure characterization of cementitious materials. The course will be held from 10 to 14 August 2026 at the Centre for Building Materials on the TUM Garching campus (Lichtenbergstr. 2).
The course will provide the participants with an understanding of the typically used techniques for hydration and microstructure characterization of cementitious materials and the ability to interpret experimental data. Next to theoretical input on the various techniques, practical laboratory exercises as well as group exercises are part of the course. Peer networking is an important part of the course and hence an engaging social programme is foreseen.
- Basics of cement hydration and phase stability
- Sample preparation and storage
- Physical principles of various experimental techniques: XRD, TGA, NMR, SEM-EDS, FTIR, calorimetry etc.
- Evaluation and interpretation of measurement results and their limitations
- Networking
Upon successful completion of the course, the participants will receive a certificate of participation. It is also possible to obtain 5 ECTS for PhD programmes (issued by TUM), for which the participants must submit an additional report that will be graded.
The participation fee for the course is 600€ per person. Invoices are sent after completing the online registration.
