Student-, Bachelor´s- and Master´s- Theses, Semester Research

The subject of a student thesis is assigned by the Chair during an initial meeting with the student. The research is then conducted under the supervision of an assistant of the Chair in accordance with the current version of the "Timetable for Bachelor, Semester and Master Theses" for the corresponding course. In addition to the literature provided and the formatting instructions for the written draft, the TUM “Code of Conduct for Safeguarding Good Academic Practice" is also to be followed.

Before working on a topic from the field of non-destructive testing (NDT), it is important to attend the Courses of the Chair of Non-destructive Testing (link to description of courses offered) so that the student obtains an overview of the methods, fundamentals and applications of NDT, which form the basis for sound research work in non-destructive testing.

A thesis in cooperation with an industrial partner (so-called "external") can only be conducted under certain conditions. The Handout on Theses and Dissertations of the TUM (Link to Handout in german) Center for Study and Teaching contains further information. To ensure optimum support for students while working on an external thesis, the Chair will only accept theses that meet one of the following basic conditions:

  1. A joint research project (e.g. project funded by a third-party or internal research of the company) exists or is to be conducted, where the work is supervised jointly by employees of the industrial company and the chair. The supervision at the company is conducted by appropriately academically trained staff. Costs incurred by the Chair can be paid from the research project.
  2. The work is for the most part supervised by a doctoral candidate of the Chair who carries out a so-called “external” dissertation within the framework of the cooperation with the industrial company. The doctoral candidate is part of a TUM Academic Graduate Center with a physical presence at the Chair of at least 20% of normal work hours.

In all cases, the subject matter of the thesis must be part of the research focus of the Chair. A requirement to keep a student's thesis confidential generally contradicts the character of such a scientific work. If a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) has not been previously signed as part of a cooperation project, such an agreement can be concluded only in exceptional cases and only for a limited time. A NDA is usually to the disadvantage of the student and the Chair. Any additional contractual requirements between the industrial company and the student (employment contract, proprietary rights of use, liability, etc.) represent a private contract.
