The Chair of Materials Science and Testing is concerned with teaching and research in topics and questions regarding construction materials. Typical groups of materials in civil engineering are metals (e.g. steel), minerals (e.g. concrete) and organic materials (wood and polymers). New materials are developed for special applications and the properties of the materials are optimized for the requirements in question. Rules for materials are formulated which help to predict the material behavior for a particular load or exposition.

Project Members

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Christoph Gehlen

Principal Investigator

Prof. Gehlen conducts research in the field of construction materials. His research focuses, among other things, on the development of materials for large-format 3D printing in the construction industry, the development of methods for characterizing materials and components made from them and testing them with regard to a wide range of properties (including in-situ), and work aimed at describing and predicting the service life of mineral and metallic building materials as a function of exposure.

After studying chemistry and mineralogy in Bonn, he graduated in civil engineering from RWTH Aachen University in 1995. Subsequently, he obtained his doctorate at the RWTH Aachen (2000). He then founded an internationally active engineering firm in Munich, together with two partners.

After being appointed to a chair at the University of Stuttgart (spring 2006, chair "Materials in Civil Engineering"), he moved to the TUM chair "Materials Science and Testing" in the fall of 2008.

From 2012 to 2016, Professor Gehlen was Dean of Studies, from 2016 to 2021 Dean of the Faculty of Engineering Bau Geo Umwelt (BGU), and since October 2021 he has been the founding Dean of the new TUM School of Engineering and Design (ED).

He is the spokesperson of the research unit CoDA.

Eva Jägle, M.Sc.

Research Associate

Eva Jägle works as a research associate at the Chair of Materials Science and Testing at the Technical University of Munich.  Within the CoDA project her research is focused on the impact of micro structural changes caused by external conditions on coda signals.

She completed her studies in Management & Technology with a specialization in chemistry at the Technical University of Munich with a Master of Science in 2022.

Former Research Unit Members

Fabian Diewald, M.Sc.

Associated Researcher

Fabian Diewald worked as a research associate and PhD candidate at the Chair of Materials Science and Testing at the Technical University of Munich. His research focus within the CoDA project was the impact of micro structural changes due to external loads on coda signals.

Prof. Dipl.-Ing. Charlotte Thiel

Associated Researcher

Prof. Thiel is Professor of „Construction Materials “ at Regensburg University of Applied Sciences. She is Head of Concrete Laboratory and Head of Construction Materials Laboratory. Furthermore she coordinates all scientific and organisational work regarding testing and material modelling.
