Professorship of Mineral Construction Materials

The Professorship of Mineral Construction Materials is part of the Department of Materials Engineering at the TUM School of Engineering and Design. In our research, we focus on the characterization, hydration, durability and sustainability of mineral construction materials. Therefore, we are looking into all stages of the life cycle of construction materials from a materials engineering perspective.
Our main objective is to improve the eco-efficiency of their production and application. Combining experimental multi-method approaches and thermodynamic modelling, we investigate the fundamental mechanisms governing the hydration and durability of novel environmentally friendly and sustainable mineral construction materials.
We are equipped with a range of chemical, physical and mechanical testing methods. As part of the Centre for Building Materials (cbm), we actively collaborate with experts from other cbm working groups and chairs. This collaboration enables us to apply a wide range of testing methods to mineral construction materials, from the nano- to the macro-scale and to interpret the results accordingly.
Our research focus and in-house methods are also reflected in our teaching portfolio, which covers courses on material production, application and their environmental impact and sustainability, as well as analytical methods for an in-depth characterisation or determination of deterioration mechanisms.
